My Background

I loved being an English major at Harvard University and had the great privilege to study with professors who not only taught about literature but also how to write. When I decided to become an English instructor myself, I realized teaching international students was a way to travel vicariously and learn more about the world, so I earned a Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. My degree has served me well. In addition to being the Testing Coordinator for all international students at Wayne State University, I also taught at WSU's English Language Institute and Oakland Community College.

I also accomplished a life-long dream in 2018 by becoming a published co-author of The Million Dollar Greeting: Today’s Best Practices for Profit, Customer Retention and a Happy Workplace (Apollo Publishers, NYC), available on Amazon.

Tutoring Services

Reading critically and writing well are essential skills for every grade level, from kindergarten through graduate school. After working in busy classrooms, I know that nothing takes the place of one-on-one individualized attention. Years of privately tutoring native and  non-native speakers of English have shown me that the two groups share similar issues, including how to distinguish between main ideas and details, how to organize essays appropriately, and how to use academic grammar and vocabulary.

I've tutored individual students from middle school through graduate school as well as small groups. All lessons are specifically tailored to the needs and goals of the students.

Editing

I've edited a wide variety of student work, from college application essays to manuscripts for medical journals and academic CVs. Depending on the type of text, I will suggest changes and/or correct grammar and mechanics.
